Kentucky Transportation Employees’ Association
Scholarship Newsletter:
Dear Association Member,
The Scholarship Committee is now taking applications for the 2010-2011 school year. If you are a member of the Association and have a child who is eligible, I encourage you obtain an application from your Association Director and complete it before April 16th . The application and all attachments should be returned to your Association Director on or before the deadline.
The awarding of scholarships was established in 1973 by the Board of Directors. This tradition has continued each year with total awards to date in excess of $310,000. Those receiving a scholarship receive $1000 ($500 per semester toward their education. These funds are sent to their school financial aid administrator and may be used for tuition, housing,
books, and supplies.
Eligibility Requirements:
· Applicant must be a dependent child of an Association member in good standing for one year prior to the application deadline, or dependent child of an association member who died or was permanently disabled while an employee of the Transportation Cabinet.
· More than one child from a family may submit an application, however only one scholarship will be awarded to a family. If the ranking of the applicants is very close, the scholarship will be divided between the members.
· Applicants must attend an accredited junior college, college or university in Kentucky and be working toward a two-year associate or four-year bachelor degree.
· Applicants who are presently attending college must have a sophomore rank at the beginning of their second year, junior rank at the beginning of their third year, and a senior rank at the beginning of their fourth year.
· Recipients of Transportation Cabinet engineering or administrative scholarships are ineligible.
· Recipients of full paid scholarships or grants are ineligible.
· Married children are ineligible.
· Graduate students are ineligible.
Scholarship Award Criteria:
The number of scholarships awarded is determined by the Board of Directors based on the Financial status of the Association.
A point system has been developed which assigns values to each of the areas listed below.
1. Grade point average.
2. Gross family income.
3. College courses versus high school courses.
4. Average number of hours carried per semester.
After the values are assigned, they are totaled and the applicants are ranked based on their total score.
The Scholarship Committee will review the applications and make recommendations to the Board of Directors in mid May. The scholarships will be awarded at the annual scholarship luncheon in June. Recipients are required to attend the awards luncheon.
